BrightFuture – Driving Renewable Energy Adoption Among SMEs in the Netherlands

In late 2024, Kalever carried out the BrightFuture Project on behalf of an intergovernmental organization, conducting a large-scale B2B survey across Dutch small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The study aimed to uncover the key drivers, barriers, and strategies for renewable energy adoption, with the ultimate goal of delivering actionable insights to support global sustainability transitions.

Key findings include:

  • 58% solar panel adoption in cities, supported by strong infrastructure and awareness campaigns.
  • 45% view wind energy as the most sustainable option, reflecting successful offshore wind initiatives.
  • High upfront costs (47%) remain the biggest barrier in less urbanized areas.
  • Government subsidies (85%) and warranty guarantees (71%) are critical enablers for adoption.
  • Mobile-first methodology boosted participation, with 64% completing surveys on mobile devices.

To address inclusivity and awareness gaps, Kalever designed simplified, engaging survey formats, built local partnerships to reach rural SMEs, and applied sentiment analysis and trend modeling to extract insights scalable to diverse global contexts.
